The Grand-Place
The Grand Place or Grote Markt in Brussels is one of the most beautiful squares, not only in Europe but possibly in the whole world. With historic architecture all around it, this square was listed by UNESCO in 1998 as a Site of World Heritage. The Grand-Place is often considered as the top tourist attractions in Brussels and it is always full of people.
Heysel Park and the Atomium
Heysel Park in the west of Brussels is on the “must-see” lists of most visitors to the city because it houses the amazing structure known as the Atomium. Erected in 1958 for the World Fair and to symbolise the Atomic Age, it is made of chrome and steel and depicts an iron molecule blown up to a massive size. It probably looks a lot better from the outside than inside but it is possible to take a lift right to the top where you can enjoy a drink and a snack and gaze in wonder at the view.
Basilica of the Sacred Heart
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart is the fifth largest Catholic church in the world, and the largest Art Deco building anywhere on the planet. Entry to the basilica is free but there is a small charge if you want to go on up to the dome.
Belgian Comic Strip Centre
The Belgian Comic Centre is a tourist attraction with a difference. It displays comics, illustrations and life-size figures from famous comics, including The Adventures of Tintin and The Smurfs. The centre is located in the Les Magasins Waucquez art nouveau building which was once a historic department store.
Museums in Brussels
If the weather isn’t good when you are in Brussels why not visit one of the city’s very many museums? There are at least 100, including the Belgian Brewers Museum and the Brussels Museum of Industry and Labour.
